On the Schur indices of cuspidal unipotent characters

چکیده

In previous work of Gow, Ohmori, Lusztig and the author, the Schur indices of all unipotent characters of finite groups of Lie type have been explicitly determined except for six cases in groups of type F4, E7 and E8. In this paper, we show that the Schur indices of all cuspidal unipotent characters for type F4 and E8 are 1, assuming that the group is defined over a field of “good” characteristic. This settles four out of the six open cases. For type E7, we show that the Schur indices are at most 2. 2000 Mathematics Subject Classification: Primary 20C15; Secondary 20G40

THE SCHUR INDICES OF THE CUSPIDAL UNIPOTENT CHARACTERS OF THE FINITE CHEVALLEY GROUPS E7(q)

We show that the two cuspidal unipotent characters of a finite Chevalley group E7(q) have Schur index 2, provided that q is an even power of a (sufficiently large) prime number p such that p ≡ 1 mod 4. The proof uses a refinement of Kawanaka’s generalized Gelfand–Graev representations and some explicit computations with the CHEVIE computer algebra system.

Character Values, Schur Indices and Character Sheaves

In this paper we are concerned with the problem of determining the character values and Schur indices of a finite group of Lie type over Fq. We show that (under some conditions on q) these values lie in the ring of algebraic integers generated by (1 + ñq)/2 and roots of unity of order prime to q. Furthermore, we determine the Schur indices for some of the (nonrational) unipotent characters in ...

Frobenius–schur Indicators of Unipotent Characters and the Twisted Involution Module

Let W be a finite Weyl group and σ a non-trivial graph automorphism of W . We show a remarkable relation between the σ-twisted involution module for W and the Frobenius–Schur indicators of the unipotent characters of a corresponding twisted finite group of Lie type. This extends earlier results of Lusztig and Vogan for the untwisted case and then allows us to state a general result valid for an...

The Characters of the Generalized Steinberg Representations of Finite General Linear Groups on the Regular Elliptic Set

Let k be a finite field, kn|k the degree n extension of k, and G = GLn(k) the general linear group with entries in k. This paper studies the “generalized Steinberg” (GS) representations of G and proves the equivalence of several different characterizations for this class of representations. As our main result we show that the union of the class of cuspidal and GS representations of G is in natu...

An Exceptional Representation of Sp(4, Fq)

Let p be an odd prime, and let q be a power of p. Let G = Sp(4). B.Srinivasan (in [4]) discovered an irreducible representation (denoted by θ10) of Sp(4,Fq) with the following remarkable combination of properties, namely it is cuspidal(Defn. 4.1), unipotent(Defn. 5.8) as well as degenerate, i.e. it does not admit a Whittaker model(Defn. 4.2). The groups SLn(Fq) and GLn(Fq) do not have any unipo...
